今天是听写的第六天了，今天的慢速VOA中获奖人名以及电影比较多，所以遇到了一些小麻烦。Hugh自己感觉对于这些专有人名地名接触多了应该就熟悉了，就像中文里的一些流行词汇一样，明星的名字总是容易记住的。标准VOA部分整体意思听明白没有问题，可是在听写过程中会在很多小的点上出现问题，甚至有时候连断句都不对。另外有的时候像kit这个词，不是不知道可是听到了也没有想到，反而直接想成key，kid，所以根据语境判断词的能力也需要提高。
第六天的任务完成，今天因为快6点钟才起来，所以晚了一会，吃饭去了！国内的朋友已经是下午了，大家赶紧行动起来，开始今天的听写吧!

This year, something happened that the Academic Awards
that had not happened since 1964. All the winners for best acting
were from outside United States.
Daniel Day-Lewis and Tilda Swinton are British. He won best actor
for “There Will Be Blood”, She won best supporting actress for
“Michael Clayton”. French actress Marion Cotillard won the Oscar in
“La Vie en Rose”. And Spain’s Javier Bardem won best supporting
actor in “No Country for Old Man”. Hollywood is increasingly
looking outside America’s borders for stars and profit.
Jonathan Taplin is a professor at the USC Annenberg school for
communication at the university of Southern California. He says
that today, about 54 percent of the tickets sales for Hollywood
studios now come from outside the United States. For the last three
months of 2007, foreign sales totalled about 880,000,000 dollars.
But there is fierce competition for each movie dollar.
Hollywood has lost market share in some places, as other countries
developed their own film industries. For example, in the middle
80s, American films had 80 percent of the market in South Korea.
Today that share is about 40 percent.

More than 50 community organizations took part of the recent forum
that focused on a flu pandemics. But Dr. Jonathan Fielding, public
health director for Los Angeles County, says the preparations are
much the same for natural disaster and terrorism.
“We know we’re quite susceptible to earthquakes, we’ve just had
wildfires, we just did tsunami exercise even though that’s less
likely. A pandemic will occur - we just don’t know when. We are
concerned about man-made disasters. Unfortunately, we have to worry
about bio-terrorism, chemical, radiological terrorism. So the good
news is being prepared for all of them requires the same basic
ingredients, which is a emergency communication plan, emergence
preparedness kit and understanding in communities what you will do
in the event of the problem.”
He said each family need a plan, in place in case of disaster, when
phone service is maybe down and travel difficult. He said people
need emergence supplies, including medicine and bandages. a
flashlight, battery-powered radio, water, food and other essential.
He adds community organizations should have plan in place to
supplement the work of public agencies.

今天是听写的第五天，今天的慢速VOA当中，因为是和医学有些关系，Hugh对于一些医学中常出现的词反应总是要慢一些，不过还好能想起来。比如diagnose（诊断）, symptom（症状）。相信经过昨天和今天这两篇ADHD的文章之后，大家至少了解了什么是ADD和ADHD不是吗？记得Deprate Housewives里面Lynette就用了ADD相关的药物当作兴奋剂，扯远了……另外一篇造假的文章，相信大家已经记住了counterfeit（伪造）这个单词，因为多次出现了。

The study found that rates and signs of ADHD are about the
same in children there and in the United States. The Finnish
children are rarely treated with medicines, while medication is
widely used in the United States. Yet the study found the two
populations have few differences with ADHD among older children and
teenagers.
Professor Smalley says medication is very effective in the short
term. But she says the study raises important questions about the
long-term effectiveness of current treatments. The study also found
that only about half the Finnish children diagnosed with ADHD had
deficit in short-term memory and self control. These cognitive
deficits are generally considered part of the definition of
ADHD.
The study also found more evidence that ADHD symptoms change with
age, hyperactivity and lack of self control decrease. But about two
thirds of the children continue to show high levels of inattention
as children.
The Journal of the American Academic of Children and Adolescence
Psychiatry published the study. Even if drugs are used, experts say
children with ADHD also need other help. For example, they need to
learn organizational skills and they needs supportive
adults.

In Northern Africa, for example, the executives say ninety percent
of spare parts for automobiles are fake, leading to a large number
of car accidents.
Allen Drewsen, head of the International Trademark Association
says counterfeit drugs often send their own messages.
“When you are dealing with people who are buying counterfeit baby
food, counterfeit food product and counterfeit drugs, I am no
expert on how to get the message out, but I can tell you that the
message is fairly persuasive . The statics on the number of people
in Africa who were dying from counterfeit anti-malarial drugs are
very very shocking. So I think that’s the message that has to be
gotten across.”
BASCAP says public awareness campaign to call attention to the risk
of piracy must be created on a country-to-country basis, taking in
account the cultural differences. One of the best ways to get the
message across, according to the group, is to work with creative
people in local communities who are victims of piracy
themselves.

We continue our theories on learning disabilities with a
problem that is not considered a learning disability by itself, but
it can affect learning. Our subject is attention-deficit disorder
(ADD), and the related form ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity
disorder). These affect estimated 5 to 10 percent of children
worldwide.
Children who forget easily and never seem to finish tasks or pay
attention might be found to have ADD. If, in addition, they seem
overly active or unable to control their behavior, a doctor might
say it is ADHD.
Experts say the cause involves a chemical imbalance in the brain.
It can affect not only school, but also personal relationships. and
the ability to keep a job later in life. Many of those affected
also have learning disabilities or suffer from depression.
Medicines can produce calmer, clearer thinking for periods of time,
but drugs also have side effects, like weight loss and sleep
problems. And there is a debate about the morality of medicating
children. Susan Smalley is a psychiatry professor at the University
of California, Los Angeles. She just led the study on ADHD in
northern Finland.

In 2004, the International Chamber of Commerce launched
BASCAP, business action to stop counterfeiting and piracy, to stem
the surge intellectual property theft. BASCAP's leadership
group of top corporate executives issued a set of recommendations
for a global anti-counterfeiting treaty being negotiated by major
trading nations.They also called on the G-8 industrialized nations
to lead the way in enforcing laws already on the books.
The corporate executives announced plans for an international
campaign to educate consumers in the high cost of piracy. Guy
Sebban, the head of the International Chamber of Commerce, says the
education campaign represents an evolution in the group's
thinking.
“We have recognized that we cannot limit our actions by acting
only on the supply side, we have to take into account also the
demand side. And we are launching different actions to convince the
consumers of the importance of this problem, and especially putting
at the forefront question linked with health and safety.”
The group said that health and safety issues are important part of
the anti-counterfeiting message.

今天是听写的第三天，对于慢速VOA的感觉依然不错，问题仍然是一些专有名词，比如说人名，地名；对于标准VOA，语速以及发音仍然是问题所在。语速导致有些连读或者吞音的地方不容易听出来，虽然不太影响对整句意思的理解，但是这也正是听写和听的区别，尤其是像has，this，out，of，to这种小词有的时候很难辨别出来。连读确实也是需要提高的地方，因为自己说英语也不太注意连读，所以听写自然就出问题了。

the journal Social Science and Medicine.
Last December, government researchers reported a big increase in
suicides among middle-aged people in United States. They looked at
injury-related death rates by age group from 1999 to 2004. They
found that suicide increased almost 20 percent among people ages 45
to 54. No one is sure why.
By comparison, rate generally fell for 65 and older, And for people
20 to 29, the suicide rate is nearly unchanged.
The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
noted that the findings are subject to some limitations. For
example, accidental drug poisonings might sometimes be mistaken for
suicides.
Overall, suicides in the United States increase 4 percent from 1999
to 2004. That year, 32,400 people took their lives.

For ten weeks, the third in line to the throne worked as a
forward air controller, a job that included calling in air strikes
on Taliban targets.

Although the Prince didn't complete his tour, former palace
spokesman Dickie Arbiter says it was still a successful deployment
and the government's agreement with major British media to
blackout the coverage of Harry did work for a while.
“It did survive for ten weeks, and Harry has got his wish, been out
there, at the sharp end. Done a job that he has been trained to do.
And, and come home, and come home a little bit earlier than you
should have done.”
The 23-years-old Prince will now have a month of rest and
relaxation before resuming his army life. In comments released to
the media earlier this week, Prince Harry said he liked being a
normal person. He said about his service in Afghanistan that this
was about as normal as he would ever get.

听写的第二天，随着适应之后，对于慢速VOA的感觉相对不错，除了一些专有的人名，地名，基本上不会遇到什么障碍，当然这些内容随着熟悉接，接触的越来越多会好起来的；对于标准VOA，确实存在很多问题，一是语速，一是发音。语速导致有些连读或者吞音的地方不容易听出来，虽然不太影响对整句意思的理解，但是这也正是听写和听的区别。另一方面，发音也会导致有的词明明知道，却听不出来，这也需要适应，想印度那一带的发音，真的很不习惯，经常要pardon……
第二天的任务完成，又到了吃饭去学校的时间了，现在是早上七点钟，国内的朋友已经是下午了，大家赶紧行动起来，开始今天的听写吧!

A new study shows that unhappiness in middle age, also
known as midlife crisis, is a universal experience. Two economists
did the study: Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick in
England and David Blanchflower at Dartmouth College in New
Hampshire. They used information collected earlier on two million
people from eighty nations.
They found that people around the world seem to share an emotional
design in life. That design, they say, is shaped like the letter U.
Levels of happiness are highest when people are young, and when
they are old. In the middle, however, most people's happiness
and life satisfaction levels drop.
Professor Olswald says, some people suffer from middle life
depression more than others. But he says it happens to man and
woman, to single and married people, to rich and poor, and to those
with and without children.
Generally speaking, people reach their lowest levels between the
ages of about 40 and 55. But then, as they continue into old age,
their happiness starts to climb back up. What the research does not
show is why all this happens. Professor Oswald says one possibility
is that people recognize their limitations in middle age and give
up on some long-held dreams.

When details of Prince Harry's tour of duty were
disclosed in the media, it became clear that his time at a forward
base in volatile Helmand Province was drawing to a close. In fact
the Prince called himself a “bullet magnet”.
On Saturday, his father Prince Charles and his older brother Prince
William met Harry at Brize Norton air base near Oxford. Charles
said he now knows what being a parent of a son or daughter on
active duty can do to your nerves.
“While being incredibly proud of Harry, I am, I promise you,
equally proud to what it is worth of all the dedicated service
given by all our armed forces.”
Reacting to Prince Harry's return, Prime Minister Gordon Brown
said the right decision was made to get him out of Afghanistan. He
said security considerations for the prince were paramount.
“I think the whole country is going to be delighted that Prince
Harry has come back safely, that his security has been protected.
Very grateful to him for the work he has done in Afghanistan. Very
grateful to all the soldiers as he is for the support they gave him
and also for what they are doing for their country.

今天开始尝试第一次听写，确实简单的听和听写差别太大了，有的单词听出来写不出来，有的单词干脆听不出来。相对来说慢速VOA还是比较适应的，只是一两个单词可能反应不出来是什么，而标准VOA的难度就要大一些了。每一篇听力Hugh都把文本配上了，这些文本是Hugh听写之后，对照论坛中的答案修改之后的结果，可能还是有一些错误，欢迎大家指出其中的错误。
今天的任务完成了，不过没有注意到底用了多少时间，明天起开始计时，毕竟时间上的缩短也是进步的一种表现。Hugh发完文章就准备去学校了，以后每天早上都会有一期VOA听写和大家见面，如果你还没有开始听写，马上来尝试一下吧！

In rural India, the group is assisting farmers with crop
production. And in Mozambique, TechnoServe is helping develop the
travel and tourism industry. One way it identifies promising
entrepreneurs is through a business plan competetion called Belive
Begin Become. This is an intensive program that provides technical
training and expert advice. Winners receive money to bring their
business plans to reality. TechnoServe have held nine national
competitions in Central America since 2002. Five competations have
been held in Africa, including one in Tanzania last year. BBB have
been a breakthrough for me. finally I am going to own my own
business and I am going to employ people. A TechnoServe channel on
Youtube describes Belive Begin Become and some of the winning
business plans. Luba Vangelova says TechnoServe also support
entrepreneurship programs for teenagers and young
adults.
